ISPS regulations: a blessing in disguise?
It is true the isps regulations cause a further burden on operating
terminals in Rotterdam. For warehouses who do not operate their own
quay (“middle man” discussion?) there is very little extra work to be
done: they do not operate their own terminal. For actual operating
terminals, the isps legislation is additional work, no doubt. But is
it? Is the preventive character these regulations have, not saving time
and costs in the long run? I believe that is the case. My arguments:
already in 2001, I have laid down various procedures on entrance and
departure controll: passes for visitors, labels on cars (staff),
specific entrance times for trucks, etc.
Otherwise: no entrance if visitors do not have a specific job to carry
out (ships’ agents, surveyor, etc). My method does not allow dubious
visitors to enter the terminal. Let alone ‘study’ how a terminal
operates (9 times out of 10 theft is based on a relative long study of
operating procedures before the actual theft takes place). With isps,
basically our working procedures for entrance to the terminal we
implemented 3 years ago are confirmed. If these new international rules
means, no dubious visitors, tight and 100% controll in and out,
eventually resulting in less theft at various terminals in
Rotterdam, the isps is one of the greatest investments ever made.
Surely insurance companies, banks and all involved should be absolutely
delighted!
Again, we have some interesting information for you, as usual, please
feel free to contact us and share your opinion on the quality of this
bulletin. Enjoy your summer vacation. Untill the next time!

The Golfer and his
Caddy: Teamwork
Ever had a close look at how golf is played on a high level? The caddy
carrying the bag of the golfer only? Not at all, the caddy does much
more. He/she knows the pin positions on each green, knows distances to
be hit, knows distances his ‘boss’ the golfer can hit, knows his
weaknesses and strenghts, can read undulations on each green and does a
lot of preparation work: in all, a caddy indeed is much more than a
carrier of the golf bag. Now look at the relationship between you, our
client (the golfer) and us (the caddy). You: you decide, perform to
your clients, you score. Us: we assist, carry some burden, absord
stress, know our way aroung in warehousing, processing &
logistics. In all, not much of a difference. Clients &
Vulcaanhaven, operating like a team. We both strive for success!
Additional
warehousing space being considered
Some of you may know the layout of our terminal, if not, check here.
At the bottom of the drawing you will see an open storage space right
in front of our deepwater quay. Whilst for storage of materials such as
pig iron this is excellently located, quay, weighbridge, storage, we
also have good alternatives for these products. Presently, and in view
of our growing business, Vulcaanhaven is considering building
additional warehousing space upto 3.000m2. Direct discharge from vessel
into our warehouse will save clients double handling costs and
additional transportation.
A warehouse, directly connected to a deep water quay? Seems a “no
brainer” but still, investments into an additional facility like this
could cost around E 500.000,= . We will keep you posted! (more

Parcel services from China
As ferro-alloys, other metals and ores are continuing to
be exported from China in large quantities, we can offer our clients
parcel services which means that we can arrange for you shipment from
Chinese mainports right upto stored in warehouse Rotterdam or delivered
to your customer in Europe, or any other part of the world. This
service includes container shipments or shipments with conventional
vessels for bulk or breakbulk cargoes. The conventional vessels can
come directly at our quay and goods can be placed into barge directly
from seagoing vessel for transhipment to your customer. Goods can also
be stored in warehouse and you can make just in time deliveries to your
customer, who buys in warehouse or on DDU/DDP basis. At Vulcaanhaven
goods can also be placed to order of your finance bank for your
account. So goods stored in Europe can also be used to finance your
business.
For more information about this subject you can contact our China
representative Robert Zhang or our Chinese speaking Dutchman Rudi who
would be happy to give you any assistance you might require. (more

Joke of the
Month
A lady was picking through the frozen
turkeys at the supermarket, but could not find one big enough for her
family. She asked a stock boy, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?”
The stock boy replied, “No,
miss, they’re dead….”

Personal
profiles: Robert
Zhang (张晓华)
Our China
representative, Zhang Xiaohua or Robert Zhang (his western style name)
is working hard to introduce our company and its services to the
Chinese market. Based in Shenzhen (China) he offers assistance to our
Chinese clients who want to export to Europe.
He was over to the Netherlands for 2 weeks in the beginning of June to
stay in touch with the company, and meet his Dutch collegue Rudi.
Together they are responsible for the Chinese clients. Before joining
us in 2001 Robert had been working in the field of international
logistics and warehousing in China already for five years. He is a
really nice guy, who speaks very good English.
Living in Shenzhen, he is married and has a teenage daughter. Hobbies
are English translation and playing the French Horn. Apart from this he
can often be found in a swimming pool as he likes swimming.
You can find his contact details below if you
need his assistance in any way. He would be happy to help you.
NEW SERIES: 10 simple rules for
dating my daughter
With 2 teenage daughters, I am of the opinion we should have rules for
those guys who wish to date them. For the next 10 issues therefore,
especially for my fellow ‘teenage’ fathers, I am pleased to enclose a
rule each month in the hope it serves a purpose…..
Rule One:
“If you pull into my driveway
and hoot, you’d better be delivering something, because you’re sure not
picking anything up…..!

Located fairly close to our
terminal, the stadium "Sparta Kasteel" (Dutch for Castle) embraces the
atmosphere of a football club
with a longstanding tradition, not experienced elsewhere (since 1888!).
Are you in our neighbourhood, please
feel free to contact us for free tickets. Presently Sparta is in the
play off finals with hopefully promotion to the Dutch Ere Divisie, the
highest in Dutch Soccer.
